[Arpack-ng] arpack-ng compiles but fails tests

I've compiled arpack-ng-3.1.5 and the sssimp test without error, but
when I try to run sssimp, it hangs. The sssimp process uses 100% of a
core - top output:

  5551 ebryer    20   0 95380 5108 4156 R    100  0.0   0:17.27 sssimp

It keeps on like that for up to an hour at which point I kill it. It's
my impression the program should give output pretty soon like:

_saupd: number of update iterations taken
       1 -    1:     5

To compile I am using the Intel 14.0.0 compiler and openmpi 1.6.5. I am
using the intel mkl for BLAS. My configure line is:

./configure --enable-mpi
CC=icc F77=ifort
-L/opt/local/openmpi/1.6.5/intel/14.0.0/lib" LIBS="-lmpi_f77
-lmkl_scalapack_ilp64 -Wl,--start-group -lmkl_intel_ilp64
-lmkl_blas95_ilp64 -lmkl_core -lmkl_sequential -Wl,--end-group
-lmkl_blacs_openmpi_ilp64" > configure.out 2> configure.err

The configure.err file is empty at the end of that step. The make
proceeds similarly without error apart from a warning about -pthread
being deprecated, and likewise with building the examples. So when I go
to EXAMPLES/SIMPLE and make sssimp. Then when I type "./sssimp" I get
nothing. I feel like my configure line has a problem (or more than one)
but I'm pretty lost as to how to improve upon it.

The other simple test programs also hang, except for dnsimp and znsimp
which both give the result:

Error with _naupd, info =           -9
   Check the documentation of _naupd

Any pointers would be appreciated.
